Does your hip drop when you walk?

Something most people may not have thought about, but our gait patterns (walking) can provide lots of information as to what and why you may be experiencing back and hip pain.

When I see clients with lower back pain or hip pain, sometimes both, when gait analysis is assessed it is common to see the hip with the foot off the floor drop.

This can suggest either a few hip and core muscles might not be working correctly and further assessment should be carried out to identify what is causing the hip to drop during gait.

So to the take away from this blog and to test if your hips are dropping while walking try this:

  • Put a hand over each hip joint and walk for a few meters, notice if your hands move up and down on each step.
